Welcome to the Newport Jewish Cemetery Digital Prototype

Project Overview

Welcome to our site, dedicated to showcasing the potential of cemetery digitisation. Our aim is to preserve the history and legacy contained within the Newport Jewish Cemetery through comprehensive digital archiving.

Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of this project is to digitise and transcribe all readable headstones within the Newport Jewish Cemetery. By making these records accessible online, we hope to support both genealogical research and historical studies, ensuring that the stories of those interred here are preserved for future generations.

Objectives:

  • User-Friendly Interface: Design and implement an intuitive interface specifically tailored for Jewish genealogical research, ensuring that users can easily navigate and find the information they need.
  • High-Resolution Photography: Capture detailed images of all headstones using high-resolution photography to ensure clarity and detail in the digitised records.
  • Accurate Transcriptions: Provide precise transcriptions of headstone inscriptions to enhance readability and facilitate searchability within the database.
  • Online Platform Development: Develop and launch an accessible online platform by August 2024, which will host the digitised images and transcriptions. The platform will feature advanced search functionalities and metadata tagging to assist users in locating specific information efficiently.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regularly evaluate the database's effectiveness through user feedback and make iterative improvements to enhance the user experience.

Cemetery History

The Newport Jewish Cemetery is home to 191 headstones, with inscriptions dating from 1873 to 2009. Our project aims to preserve the legacy of those buried here by ensuring that their memories and stories remain accessible to all.
